Using Essential Oils During Pregnancy.

Pregnancy Oils.jpg

Being pregnant is a truly humbling experience. I want to share with you some of the holistic products and practices that I incorporated into my routine for this last pregnancy. Most are essential oils, but I also want to reference some other things that have been part of these routines as well, such as supplements and a few specific healthy habits. I treat my essential oils that way - incorporating diet, exercise and supplements regularly are integral to experiencing true progress in reaching any wellness goal. The same is true with pregnancy!

If you’re unfamiliar with essential oils, you can learn more about my story with them (and the science behind why they work!) HERE. What’s really amazing about these oils is the versatility - they can be used topically (applied to your skin), aromatically (diffused into the air) or taken internally (by adding drops to water or veggie capsules and taken like a supplement), and these 3 ways can help support your health in truly transformative and incredible ways! Also, I only use doTERRA essential oils because they are the safest and purest essential oils (think 3rd party testing, results made available to the public, and TONS of peer-reviewed clinical and research studies). I only want to use the safest oils on my body and with my family, which is why I choose doTERRA.

DISCLAIMER (because I have to): Please keep in mind, I am NOT a doctor, so please consult yours before using anything I recommend. My doc actually recommended essential oils to me early on in my pregnancy, and I just giggled as she shared with me the different ways they could help. And of course, she is right! It made me really happy that my OBGYN practice recognizes the value of these powerful plant essences.

Pregnancy Oils6.jpg

Healthy practices that really helped me during this pregnancy:

  1. Drinking tons of water (I aim for 100 oz. per day).

  2. Eating an astronomical amount of protein (around 80-100 grams per day).

  3. Exercising (I did a pretty decent job at this up until my 8th month, ha). I lifted light weights, did the row machine (until my belly got in the way), did the stair climber and swam.

  4. Resting a lot, especially taking naps and putting my feet up for 10-minute water breaks throughout the day.

  5. Taking my prenatals, probiotics and iron supplements (I have been anemic every pregnancy, so the last one is especially important for me).

  6. Cutting out refined sugar. This is something I implemented during my last trimester in an effort to keep my weight down because I tend to have big babies.

  7. Lastly, using my essential oils! I’ll break it down for you below!

1st Trimester:

oils7.jpg

Digestion/Nausea:
- Add 1-2 drops Lemon essential oil to water and drink. I do this all throughout the day, and the Lemon really helps with the nausea. This is one of my favorite things I have done all throughout my pregnancy! Just make sure to use a glass or aluminum container - you never want to put essential oils in plastic (they will break down the plastic material).

- Rub 1-2 drops DigestZen on my belly. I added this to this unscented lotion, this belly oil or fractionated coconut oil to help it absorb into my skin. This really helped with the early pregnancy nausea that was just awwwwwful.

Mood Swings/Pregnancy Blues:

- I applied 1-2 drops of Balance (known as the grounding blend) to my pulse points all throughout the day.
- Diffuse 4-6 drops Elevation (the joyful blend) or Citrus Bliss (the invigorating blend) to create a sunny, optimistic environment in the home.

Daily “Perfume” Blend:
- I apply an even mix of Magnolia and Rose essential oil rollerballs to my pulse points, over my heart and on the back of my neck. Smells better than any perfume I’ve ever used, with the added benefit of boosting the immune system (Rose) and keeping me calm and grounded (Magnolia).

Boost Energy + Combat Fatigue.

- Sniff Peppermint! I literally just open the bottle and take a whiff throughout the day when I need a pick-me-up. You can also apply 1-2 drops to the back of your neck and it instantly provides a cooling, refreshing sensation. Better than a 3pm coffee ;)

- Take my daily Life Long Vitality supplements! This vitamin pack serves as a complete prenatal vitamin, and it has helped boost my energy and immune system better than what I took during any of my other pregnancies! So very happy with these supplements and I will continue to take them after I am no longer pregnant.

Headaches:
- Thankfully, this pregnancy I haven’t had the kind of headaches I had when I was pregnant with Daxton (I lived with migraines that pregnancy - not fun!) But for any kind of head tension, I would put 1 drop of Frankincense and 1 drop of Peppermint under my tongue and apply Frankincense to my temples and massage the oil in.

2nd Trimester:

Pregnancy EOs3.jpg

Heartburn:
- Add 1-2 Terrazyme supplements with every meal to help with that overly-full feeling. This is a whole-food digestive enzyme supplement that helps the body digest protein fats, sugars and complex carbs. It also helps your stomach break down foods in the most efficient way and converting it into energy.

Muscle Cramps/Charlie Horse:
- I take 4 Bone Nutrient Complex capsules every night right before I go to bed. Not only is it beneficial for the baby (mega doses of Trace Minerals, Vitamin C & D), but the Magnesium and Calcium are especially helpful for easing those calf/leg cramps that are such a mystery during pregnancy.

Back Pain:
- I used the Deep Blue Rub on my back almost every night after getting out of the bath tub. Creates such a relief from all the pressure!

Stretch Marks:
- I use the Immortelle rollerball on my stretch marks after applying belly balm and lotion. Helps spot treat certain areas and is so good for skin health overall!

3rd Trimester:

Pregnancy EOs.jpg

Sleep:
- Sleep has become an elusive challenge this last month or so, but I’m not trying to fight the insomnia anymore. Since this is my 3rd pregnancy, I know my body so well these days, and I KNOW that the insomnia is just part of my training (or is it self-inflicted hazing?) of prepping for that nighttime baby feeding schedule. However, I DO love diffusing Serenity or Balance at night before bed, and I often take 1 Serenity Restful Complex capsule before I go to sleep as well.

Sleep (in the woods) Diffuser Blend:
***I recommend this blend to anyone who doesn’t prefer floral scents like lavender for bedtime.

- 3 drops Vetiver
- 3 drops Cedarwood
- 3 drops Douglas Fir
Combine these oils in a diffuser with water and enjoy the relaxing, rest-enhancing aroma!

Soothe Muscles + Unwind:
- I take a bath every single night. Without fail. I love adding oils to the bathwater, especially Frankincense and Balance. I have also been adding this Little Barn Apothecary body oil to my bathtub lately, because YUM.

The Essential Oils I Use/Avoid During Pregnancy + Resources:

Pregnancy EOs2.jpg

There are SO many great oils that I have been avoiding since I got pregnant, because certain oils can influence hormones, and I personally want my body to regulate its hormones on its own during pregnancy. I look forward to being able to use these again!

Avoid:
- I avoid using the following oils topically and internally while pregnant: Yarrow, Grapefruit, Clary Sage, Black Pepper, Geranium, Jasmine, Wintergreen, Cassia, Clove.
*Note: These oils can be safely diffused during pregnancy.

Use:
- Oils that I love and USE regularly for pregnancy (aromatically, topically and internally): Lemon, Wild Orange, Frankincense, Rose, Magnolia & Peppermint.
*Note: Discontinue use of Peppermint after delivery if you want to breastfeed. Peppermint reduces milk production so you will want to avoid this during the duration of your breastfeeding experience!

- Essential Oils blends that I use regularly for pregnancy: Balance, Elevation, OnGuard, Serenity, DigestZen, Deep Blue, Immortelle, Adaptiv, Citrus Bliss.

If you’re ever curious about which oils are safe to use for pregnancy, I HIGHLY recommend checking out The Essential Midwife site, grabbing her book HERE and checking out this blog post from doTERRA.

If you are interested in getting some of these oils in your life, leave your email address in the comment section and I will hook you up with a special gift when you place your 1st purchase!

Pregnancy Ride-or-Die Products. Baby #3.

Thoughts on this baby boy.jpg

This baby boy #3 isn’t kidding - he means BUSINESS. My body knows what its doing this third time around and everything has happened so quickly - the bump, the swelling, the sore feet, back aches, dry skin and a whole bunch of other weird things. Not to make pregnancy sound rough - but there are definitely some interesting challenges to face and I’ve found some things that have helped ease some of the more difficult tasks! Rounding up some pregnancy-safe products and routines that have been working for me this time around and I hope they help you out, too, sister! Most of this stuff isn’t pregnancy-specific, so you don’t have to be bumpin’ to reap the benefits.

*Also, because I love you, I have a few discount codes at the bottom of this post that you can use if you decide to purchase any of these products - yay! Because I like to shop but I REALLY like to shop with promo codes ;)

Bath Time.
Follain Rose Bath Salts + Little Barn Apothecary Grapefruit & Honeysuckle Body Oil
You guys. I’ve found the most winning combination and I can’t stop this bath situation - I take one almost every night! During my last pregnancy, taking baths really helped me unwind at the end of the night and sleep better. This time around it’s already helping with my sore back and feet. I simply shimmy some of these bath salts into the running water and then add 5-10 pumps of this oil into the water as well. It’s literally the best scent of my life and the oil really helps your skin stay hydrated, especially when you get out of the bath.

Vitamin Time.
DoTERRA Life Long Vitality Supplements + Probiotic + Bone Nutrient Complex
I take the full dose recommended for these supplements every single day and it serves as a complete prenatal. I also take the Bone Nutrient Complex, the Probiotic AND I’m on an iron supplement (I’m always anemic during my pregnancies). It’s a lot of vitamins, but I just take them with breakfast and a glass of juice and get it done. I love that they are made from whole-food sources, so there’s no unnecessary synthetic ingredients padded in. I’ve learned so much since my last pregnancy about the types of vitamins that really resonate with my body, so this is one of the things I am most proud of using daily!

Blanqi Oy1.jpg

Clothes Time.
I wish I could just be naked. But that can’t really happen because this isn’t Papua New Gineua and my kids might get weirded out. But this time around I’ve been wearing some awesome Carly Jane hand-me-downs from my BFF Holly along with a slew of Target Knox Rose dresses (non-maternity). And I’ve been SO comfy! Especially since we’ve had an endless summer over here. Also, I went ahead and busted out all the Blanqi shapewear because I learned about this brand last time and seriously, it’s THE game changer. Helps lift my belly and keep the pressure off my special area and lower back. If you are pregnant, BUY THIS TANK. You will be forever changed.

Pregnancy Belly Oil.jpg

Skincare Time.
On my Face:
I often switch up my skincare routine, but I’ve enjoyed cleansing with doTERRA Verage Cleanser, using the Indie Lee COQ-10 Toner, using the Pai Back to Life Serum and the Herbivore Botanicals Prism and Orchid face oils for moisture. These are all safe for pregnancy (I absolutely LOVE the doTERRA Yarrow/Pom oil for my face, but it’s not something that’s pregnancy-safe so I’ve taken a break from it until the baby arrives).

On my Belly:
I have stretch marks from my previous pregnancies, and from what I’ve read they’re just a genetic thing and there’s not TONS you can do about them. But I still try! This pregnancy I’ve been slathering my belly in the Earth Mama Belly Oil (used at night) + Earth Mama Belly Butter (used in the morning) + doTERRA Body Butter (used after showering and swimming) & Immortelle Anti-Aging Rollerball Blend (used to spot treat areas where I already have stretch marks, to help repair the skin). It might seem like a lot, but I really love all these products and the routine of using them really relaxes me and feels like self-care. So I love them all!

Getting Busy with Essential Oils.

This is a mature blog post so if you are young go ahead and skip over this one - I am not responsible for apologizing to your parents. And if you’re my parents, mayyyyybe don’t read this either.

This is a mature blog post so if you are young go ahead and skip over this one - I am not responsible for apologizing to your parents. And if you’re my parents, mayyyyybe don’t read this either.

There’s no need to be shy about it. It’s Valentines Day tomorrow and I feel like I would be doing a disservice by NOT sharing a few playful DIYs with you. You have an arsenal of essential oils at your fingertips, so why not incorporate them in a new way? Ain’t nothing wrong with it, people! Let’s put these plant powers to work for us!

For those of you who don’t know, EOs have been used throughout history to support libido, balance hormones and increase passion and desire. These oils can help create ambiance, relieve stress and promote whole-body relaxation (yes please, YES.) I have been on a journey over the past several years, getting educated on the maaany ways to incorporate essential oils in different parts of my life. From mom brain to allergies, boosting the immune system to alleviating stress, I have found so much solace in these precious oils. So naturally, using them to create an atmosphere of intimacy was kind of inevitable. And no one over here is mad about it soooo. Let’s talk about how you can do that, too, shall we?

Actually let’s not talk (because one of us is blushing here and I actually don’t think it’s me), let’s just get down to business (that’s what she said! I know I know - I’m awful.) Here are some DIYs for helping you create an aphrodisiac atmosphere of love, acceptance and passion. Just consider this the crunchy granola version of “that” scene from Friends (“7, 7… 7!” anyone??) ;)

Get Busy Bedroom Spray2.jpg

“Get Busy” Bedroom Mist:
Combine the following essential oils in a 2-ounce glass spray bottle:

- 15 drops Sandalwood
- 15 drops Bergamot
- 7 drops Ginger
- 7 drops Lime
- 5 drops Ylang Ylang
- 3 drops Frankincense

Fill up the rest of the bottle with distilled water. Add dried florals if you’re feeling like it. Shake bottle and spray throughout bedroom and onto sheets to freshen aroma. This smells SO good and sets the tone for a romantic environment.

*Shop these oils here, glass bottles here

Get Busy Spray3.jpg

“Baby, Lemme Light Your Fire” Massage Blend:
Combine the following essential oils in 1/4 cup fractionated coconut oil or unscented lotion and massage onto skin:

- 1 drop Rose
- 1 drop Jasmine
- 1 drop Neroli
- 3 drops Sandalwood
- 2 drops Ylang Ylang

*Shop these oils here
**My fave Fractionated Coconut Oil and Unscented Lotion here.

Note 1: Fractionated Coconut Oil is simply coconut oil that stays in liquid form and doesn’t have that coconut-y scent. It’s a great carrier oil to use with essential oils to dilute them for sensitive skin, but you can also use sweet almond oil or even olive oil.

Note 2: When making essential oil DIYs, it’s important to always use glass or stainless steel containers. The essential oils will cause anything plastic to break down and leach.

Diffuser blend3.jpg

“Crash Into You” Diffuser Blend:
Combine the following oils in an ultrasonic diffuser and diffuse in the bedroom:

- 2 Siberian Fir
- 2 Patchouli
- 2 Sandalwood
- 2 Clary Sage
- 2 Wild Orange

”You’re My Fantasy” Diffuser Blend:
Combine the following oils in an ultrasonic diffuser and diffuse in the bedroom:

- 2 drops Ylang Ylang
- 2 drops Sandalwood
- 2 drops Tangerine

Motivate2.jpg

Bonus Tips:

  • For fresh breath, apply 1-2 drops of Peppermint essential oil on the tongue before your inevitable makeout sesh. Fresh breath goes a long way, people!

  • For a personal fragrance for her, I highly recommend DoTERRA’s Whisper blend - it’s full of incredibly romantic essential oils and creates a unique aroma on each person because of the way it interacts with your personal body chemistry. The scent ranges from sweet & spicy to powdery & sexy.

  • Dry Brush using 1 drop Black Pepper + 1 drop Grapefruit before taking a shower or bath. Brush the skin lightly in the direction of your heart - this will cleanse the lymphatic system and stimulate blood flow.

  • Add 1-2 drops of 1 of these oils to a romantic bath (do this while the water is running in the stream coming from the faucet to ensure even dilution): Frankincense, Rose, Sandalwood or Ylang Ylang

  • Other oils blends that do the right job accompanying sexy time: Motivate, Clary Calm and Passion. Apply to pulse points and if you’re feeling like a QUEEN, to the inner thighs.

  • Apply Ylang Ylang to your belly about 10 minutes before business time.

  • For “His & Hers” (libido-boosting) rollerball blends, check out my friend Savannah’s post here.

Clary Calm.jpg

Okay now you have a head full of ideas. Let me know if you have any questions! The most important part of this is for you to be completely comfortable and have fun trying something a little new! Wishing you a memorable Valentines Day, friends!

Want to chat with me about how to get these oils in your life for 25% off? Girl, send a message at oykristen@gmail.com and we can get you set UP.

P.S. - Coming from a Christian background, the topic of intimacy isn’t often addressed in an effort to promote purity. However, I believe sex is a gift from God, and we Christians shouldn’t be on the boring side of the narrative - we should really enjoy it and be the ones having euphoric, ah-mazing sex. So this post is my way of talking about it in a way that I hope is received as tasteful and helpful! xx

My Nighttime Skincare Routine.

Skincare18.jpg
Skincare3.jpg

I have always been really really ridiculously bad at sticking to a skincare routine. I am totally the girl that goes to sleep with her makeup on, because in the back of my mind I think, “Well, it’s non-toxic makeup so how bad can it be if I just lay down for a minute…?” And that used to happen 3+ times per week. I know - BAD GIRL. But I have been on a skincare journey and last summer I started getting serious about my skincare routine. This routine has really become something that I look forward to at the end of the day, and feels like so much more than just washing my face. These 5 minutes that I spend helps me unwind, feels like a bit of self-care (ha because IT IS), and I genuinely know that my skin has drastically improved. So here’s the routine!

Skincare15.jpg

1. Cleanse.
I squeeze a dime-sized amount of DoTERRA Facial Cleanser to my Clarisonic Mia 1 and do a 60-second scrub in a circular motion. It feels like a face massage and it’s so unbelievably relaxing.

2. Remove eye makeup.
I apply a few drops of Plant Apothecary Reset Organic Makeup Remover on a cotton pad and gently remove my eye makeup. It’s hard to find a clean eye makeup remover and this one performs! I love it.

3. Tone.
I do a quick swipe of this DoTERRA Pore-Reducing Toner with a cotton ball and then let my skin dry.

4. Serum + Face Massage.
This is the step that feels the most indulgent. I apply about 2-3 drops of this Yarrow/Pom blend and rub it in. Then I use this Rose Quartz Facial Roller and spend about 60 seconds massaging the serum into my skin. I use upward strokes and it feels SO. GOOD. I honestly credit my skin’s completely changed texture to this oil blend - it is so good it’s almost scary. I am OBSESSED. This blend of yarrow essential oil with cold-pressed pomegranate oil activates protective skin proteins that enable collagen production. AKA my secret skin weapon. Seriously.

5. Moisturize.

After the serum is roller in, I apply a dollop of DoTERRA Anti-Aging Moisturizer to seal in the moisture and give my skin a final drink of goodness. This moisturizer smells reeeeally good too.

5. Eye Cream, too.
Finally, I apply a tiny bit of DoTERRA Anti-Aging Eye Cream around my eyes. I use 1/2 of a pump of this stuff for both eyes because seriously - a little goes so far!

Skincare10.jpg

There you have it! The routine that I’ve been rocking lately and I am loving it. There is something truly therapeutic about taking these few minutes for myself at the end of the day. All of these products are all SO clean and good for my skin, which matters so much to me. Our skin is the largest organ in the body, and it soaks up everything we put on it. These products are free of phthalates, fragrances and chemicals that are loaded into so many other skincare products. So I feel good about them and they feel good about me, too! Also, you can shop all the DoTERRA products for 25% off here!

I posted an IGTV episode sharing this routine, you can see it here.

Do yourself a favor and put together a little nighttime routine for you skin - you will feel so relaxed and love the results, too! xx

Holiday Wassail (with essential oils!)

Wassail3.jpg

It’s Thanksgiving week! Yes!!! I am fist pumping while I write this. I truly believe that Thanksgiving and Christmas are holidays that go hand-in-hand. Once we begin the celebrations for Thanksgiving, I can’t stop that cozy magical feeling through New Years. It’s just all such a wonderful time of year, really focusing on gratitude and the amazing miracles that we all have living amongst us. It’s just the best time of year! Minus the insane volume of deal emails.

I lucked out because a few weeks ago Stevie’s side of the family got together and I got to try out a few of my holiday recipes on them. Not only was it fun to feed everyone, but you know how family is, right? They keep it REAL. I got such great feedback on this recipe (and others to come!), and was able to tweak these to make them even better. I am so excited to share these recipes with you, and I hope that you and your family are able to gather around your table this year and enjoy the wonder and simplicity of a holiday feast together.

I wanted to make wassail because, seriously, ever since I watched Little Women when I was a little girl, I wanted to know what it tasted like! I researched so many recipes and found out that it’s basically glorified apple cider, which I can definitely get myself onboard with. And I added in the essential oils because it’s such a great way to get some of the incredible healthy benefits (and flavor!) from these oils. So without further adieu, let’s your Wassail, my lady ;)

Wassail4.jpg

Ingredients:
- 4 cups apple cider
- 2 cups pineapple juice
- 2 cups orange juice
- 1 drop DoTERRA Cinnamon essential oil
- 1 drop DoTERRA Ginger essential oil
- 1 drop DoTERRA Clove essential oil
- 1 drop DoTERRA Frankincense essential oil

Method:

1. Combine all the ingredients in a slow cooker and heat on low for 4 hours.

I love this recipe so much because I am totally an apple cider girl. This is super easy to throw together, will make your house smell like the absolute North Pole, and it tastes incredible! The essential oils add so much flavor and depth and, let’s be honest, when you throw them in a slow cooker is basically like diffusing them so the house smells SO GOOD. If you don’t have these oils you could dust in some of the spices instead. And after pouring into your own mug, you can add an adult beverage to increase the merriment. My suggestion - bourbon or whiskey. You will be very thankful and merry indeed.

What are your plans for Thanksgiving this week?! Do you already have your menu planned or are you a bit more spontaneous? If you make this recipe please report back here and let me know your thoughts!
